IJ Kalcum

Art/Dean of Students

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I was actually going to school to get into PT and needed a job. I got hired as the art teacher at WCDS and before I knew it I was enjoying what I was doing and the people I worked with.

 Who inspires you the most?

My wife.

What adjectives would you use to describe your presence in the classroom?

Loud, exciting, laid back, fun, and sometimes serious

How has becoming a teacher changed for you over the years?

My approach and how I have class is much different than when I started. I am more confident in what I am teaching and less worried about what others think.

If you weren’t teaching, what career would you have chosen?

Something in the medical field.

Growing up, who was your most inspirational teacher and why?

Woody Yoder and Bruce Lee (for real)

What impact or legacy do you hope to leave to your students?

Creativity can be done in many different ways and to develop even if it’s small a passion for the arts.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement as a teacher so far?

Getting students to see their talents and how they grow

What are some of the most important life skills you hope to instill in your students?

Be present
