Virginia Heinlein was a transformative leader whose organizing skill and vision reshaped Wheeling Country Day School into a substantial elementary school and kindergarten, setting the foundation for WCDS’s esteemed reputation among private day schools. For over 30 years, her dedication and dynamic presence drove the school’s growth and established its place in the broader educational community. Known for her high expectations, Ms. Heinlein was remembered by her students “with fear, trepidation, and much respect.”

In the 1950s, she captured the enduring mission of WCDS: “We have never changed in our emphasis upon first the fundamentals of learning with the richest opportunities and breadth added thereafter. What we are, we have been in a steady unbroken line.” Her leadership and vision continue to shape WCDS’s commitment to foundational excellence and lifelong learning.
